More cane more gain

Data from these trials have resulted in a statistically significant predicted increase in sugar yield of 7.7% and predicted cane yield increase of 9.1%.

A series of 6 (7 harvests) trials conducted from Ingham (FNQ) to Broadwater (Nth NSW) between 2008 & 2013 were analysed to assess the impact of Entec treatment of urea on cane yield, CCS and sugar yield. Mean raw sugar yield was 14.67 t/ha for conventional urea and 15.26 t/ha for Entec treated urea at equivalent nitrogen rates. 

As this data set had a wide range of cane yields (48 t/ha – 195 t/ha), data was normalised to % yield vs urea treatment e.g. if cane yield was 100 t/ha with urea and 108 t/ha with Entec urea, then relative yields were 100 & 108% respectively.

Data from these trials was pooled and analysed using regression analysis (Genstat 16th edition) resulting in a statistically significant (P<0.05) predicted increase in sugar yield of 7.7% and predicted cane yield increase of 9.1%. While not significant, predicted CCS levels were estimated to be 1.2% lower where Entec was used.

Interrogation of the data suggested that the greatest benefits from using Entec were derived where nitrogen was applied and heavy rainfall that was likely to result in either free drainage or waterlogging occurred within 6 weeks of fertilisation. Benefits were also derived on heavy textured irrigation soils that were frequently irrigated following fertilisation. It is suggested that no benefits from Entec application are likely where nitrogen is applied more than 2 months ahead of significant rainfall or irrigation.
